Jingwen Liu

Jingwen completed her undergraduate studies at Mechanical Engineering, University of Sheffield in June 2021 with first class honours. She started her PhD at University College London in October 2021.

Her project is exploring the efficacy of hybrid biomaterial for cartilage replacement (implants) in human joints, using micro-CT techniques supervised by Professor Peter Lee. The organic/inorganic hybrid biomaterials are developed working with co-supervisor, Professor Julian Jones at Imperial College. The novel materials are 3D printed into lattice shapes for fixture into cortical bone on one side, and as replacement for articular cartilage on the other side. In vitro tests are performed first to determine biocompatibility. In vivo tests are performed on the most promising materials to determine ingrowth efficacy. Ex vivo testing of sheep implants will be characterised using advanced synchrotron imaging techniques, quantifying the biomechanical properties of the regrown bone/implant bonding. The ultimate goal is to help develop improved 3D printable implants for human joint replacements with better combined hard-tissue and soft-tissue integration.
