Emily Heppell

Emily is a cross-appointed PhD student between the University of Oxford, Diamond Light Source and ISIS Neutron and Muon Source. Emily studies interfacial magnetism in thin film heterostructures that she grows via Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) at the RCaH before performing multi-method studies involving magnetic (XAS/XMCD/XMLD, XPEEM, PNR) and transport measurements at Diamond and ISIS and electron microscopy (SEM/TEM) at the RCaH. As well as providing the opportunity to collaborate with in-house specialists and utilise the microscopy and MBE labs, Research Complex is perfectly located for Emily to work effectively as a cross-facilities student, with Diamond and ISIS also being based at the Harwell Campus. Before starting her PhD in 2021, Emily completed her Masters of Science in Physics at the University of Birmingham with a thesis titled “Quantum Magnetism in Less Than Three Dimensions’.
