Physical Sciences

The Physical Sciences Facility brings together researchers, specialist laboratories and advanced technologies to support collaborative research across materials science, catalysis, energy research and advanced manufacturing. Located within the Research Complex at Harwell, it provides an environment where academic, national laboratory and industrial teams work together to tackle complex scientific challenges and develop innovative technologies.

Facilities and expertise

Researchers have access to a broad range of laboratories and technologies supporting materials characterisation, advanced manufacturing, spectroscopy and analytical science. Representative capabilities include photoelectron spectroscopy through HarwellXPS, laser-based research technologies from the Central Laser Facility, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, FT-Raman spectrometry, gloveboxes and high-temperature furnaces, supported by specialist technical expertise throughout the research process.
