ISIS Neutron and Muon Source

overview

ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is the UK's national facility for materials research using neutrons and muons. Funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council, this facility consists of a series of particle accelerators the size of several football pitches, which accelerate protons up to 84% of the speed of light. These protons collide with targets, generating neutrons and muons, which are then channelled into some 34 experimental stations (instruments), used by thousands of national and international researchers from academia and industry for research aiding materials discovery for real-world problems. Neutron and muon techniques provide unique insights into the behaviour of materials at the atomic, molecular and nanoscale level.

Research Complex and ISIS are located close to each other on the Harwell Campus and support each other in a variety of collaborations.
