The UKRI has announced that Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, which includes the Research Complex at Harwell, is among several sites to receive funding to reduce their carbon footprint. This funding will cover a number of energy efficiency plans including solar panels, heat pumps, insulation and LED lighting.

It is estimated they will reduce total UKRI emissions by 1,100 tonnes of CO2-equivalent a year and installation is planned to begin within the next couple of months.

Other sites that will benefit from the funding include:

  • the British Geological Survey (Natural Environment Research Council)
  • Daresbury Laboratory (Science and Technology Facilities Council)
  • London Institute of Medical Sciences (Medical Research Council)
  • UKRI headquarters, Polaris House in Swindon

The government has provided the UKRI with £8 million from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, which helps continue to pave the way of the UKRI's ambition to be carbon neutral by 2040.
