The UKRI has announced that the Daphne Jackson Fellowships are open for applications with no closing date. This fellowship applies to those looking to return to a research career after a break of two or more years for family, health or caring reasons. The aim is to give participants the confidence and skills they need to make a successful return to research.

The Daphne Jackson Trust was established in 1992 in memory of Professor Daphne Jackson – the UK’s first female Professor of Physics.  Daphne devised a Fellowship scheme in the mid-1980s to support talented individuals wanting to return to research after a career break. This scheme has, and continues to evolve, providing vital support that enables returning researchers to upskill and gain the confidence they need to successfully re-enter research careers.

The fellowship provides an opportunity to balance a personalised retraining programme with a challenging research project, in a supportive UK university or research establishment.

It has a flexible work layout, with at least 100 hours retraining per year, and part-time – usually completed over two years at 0.5 full-time equivalent although some UKRI funders may award longer than this.

Daphne Jackson fellowships are open to all researchers across science, technology, engineering, mathematics, social sciences, arts and humanities, and other related disciplines.
