RCaH researchers focus on target for cholesterol-lowering drugs

Imperial College scientists working in the Research Complex have used the Diamond Light Source to determine the structure of a key protein found in biological membranes. In humans, the Apical Sodium dependent Bile Acid Transporter (ASBT) protein pumps chemicals across cell membranes and can affect the levels of cholesterol in the blood. The new protein structure actually comes from bacteria, but it is very similar to the human version. Since ASBT is a target for drugs that reduce cholesterol levels, this new knowledge will help to improve their effectiveness. To read more click here.
