Fighting the NDM-1 superbug

The NDM-1 superbug is resistant to the most powerful antibiotics. The bacteria carry the special NDM-1 enzyme that destroys the drugs before they can get to work. RCaH researchers have used X-ray crystallography at the Diamond Synchrotron to study the structure of the enzyme in detail, which should allow drug companies to begin to design drugs to stop NDM-1 working and combat the threat (click here for more information, here for the BBC website story and here for the journal article).
