Spinout company nominated for prestigious engineering award

CLF spinout Cobalt Light Systems is one of three candidates shortlisted for the UK's premier engineering prize, the MacRobert Award, alongside Rolls Royce and QineticQ-owned Optasense. It has been recognised for pioneering a means of identifying the chemical composition of liquids sealed within non-metallic containers without opening them, which they have developed into an airport security scanner that should enable airports to remove the existing hand-luggage liquid ban. The scanner has now been introduced in a total of 65 airports across Europe. The technology behind the device originates from CLF ultrafast laser facilities, and is under development at RCaH in partnership with Exeter University and UCL for novel non-invasive breast cancer screening and bone disease diagnosis.
